2003-03-26 - 3:54 p.m. HR question for the Masses I posted another entry this morning.... it's here There's a really cool picture I posed at the end of that entry. Many of you know that the company I worked for split back in September into a new company. The new company now wants a copy of my HR file from the original hiring company. The original company sent them to our homes. The last I heard, HR files were confidential and I don't have to turn this file into anyone. The HR person stated to me via email that they want the file to determine our hire dates so they can give us "credit" from the original hire date. I offered to make copies of that information for her. Her response was that she wants the ENTIRE file, not just that information. She said that the rest of the employees have been turning in their file to her unopened but that I was certainly welcome to make a copy of it for my records if I wanted to. I opened mine to see what was in there, and I found a performance appraisal that was never reviewed with me. It was a positive one (a very good one in fact) but it was before the split, so as far as I'm concerned they have no right to it, or what's written in it; still, I had no idea it was in there. It certainly wasn't taken into consideration back in November when they did the promotion list, why should they get it NOW? Here's my question...am I somehow obligated to turn in this file? Please don't forget to answer my survey... it's research for a small business idea... all comments appreciated, no reasonable offer refused!!! It won't take five minutes, I PROMISE! |
