2003-07-10 - 2:02 p.m. There's no Crime Okay.. prepare for a rant. It may not be a crime, but dammit, what happened is certainly criminal. I don't know if anyone's been following this case, but there is a 10year old girl who is missing. Her name is Brittany and she has AIDS. The last time anyone saw her was THREE YEARS ago. Her mother died of AIDS and her father is in jail. (this all happened in a suburb of Richmond) Before her mother died, she made arrangements with a friend to care for the little girl. Her mother died and Brittany went to live with this family friend. At some point, no one knows when, the little girl disappeared. Her caretaker said that caring for the little girl became "too stressful" so she gave her to two friends to care for her. The friends say they never had her. The police got involved when it was discovered that her original caretaker was cashing checks from the state that were payment for caring for Brittany when she hadn't been in her care for about three years. The police have asked the original caretaker where she is and she's sticking to her story. The two women she claims to have given her to, say she was never in their care and the police believe them. The little girl's father, doesn't seem to care less. Her caretaker was convicted of fraud and sentenced, but there's no Brittany. They've used cadaver dogs and done an exhaustive search of the area surrounding her home. They even looked at an old septic tank that was covered when she put an extension onto her home (paid for out of money she got for Brittany). The police say that no crime's been committed, and since it was a private agreement between Brittany's mother and this woman, there's no crime and no one knew to look out for Brittany until they got wind of the check issue.... I know a missing child isn't a crime, but there's something really weird here.... The fact that no one can find this child isn't a reason for concern? The fact that no one's seen hide nor hair of this child for THREE years isn't a crime? The last time she was seen she was 7 years old.... she'd now be 10. What about school? They're now waiting to find out if the remains of a child in the mid-west could be Brittany. Someone is obviously lying. Isn't there anything they can do to make this woman tell the truth? Isn't there anything they can do to make someone responsible for Brittany's disappearance? Her mother made arrangements in good faith before she died. She tried to see to the welfare of her daughter as best she could and it's as if this child has been thrown away and there's nothing anyone can do. I know I'm not the only person that finds this whole situation too horrible for words, but isn't there something we can do? Can we bring back the inquisition just ONCE? Yeah, I know... that didn't get any real answers either.... someone knows SOMETHING about this child.... I hope she's alive, and in good, caring hands. I hope she's getting the treatment she needs. If, by some chance, she's not alive, I hope and pray that she's found love and caring that she hasn't known in quite a while. I hope the old adage that God protects fools and little children is true. Please don't forget to answer my survey... it's research for a small business idea... all comments appreciated, no reasonable offer refused!!! It won't take five minutes, I PROMISE! |
