2003-05-26 - 5:08 p.m. We had a plan... and then it rained. Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said about Sapphire Joust and Atlantia's Kingdom Birthday. Even with the weather.. it ROCKED! Here's MY best and worst (in no real particular order)... 1. Rain (well DUH). 2. Some sort of virus that hit our camp (I was the first victim) 3. Mental Note: Do not camp near the porta-castles with TWO dogs. Everytime anyone walked by, the little one went off, anytime anyone slammed the porta-castle door, the larger one went off and anytime anyone had to say a prayer to the porcelain (in this case plastic) god, they both went off. by 6:15 on Saturday, they were home. I took them home, got myself a shower and into a warm bed and took a short nap. When I woke up two hours later, I put them in the truck and headed for the vet (no.. not to put them down, to board them). After that, I made my return to camp which leads me to number .... 4. I was an hour late for my chirurgeon shift). 5. My camp mates were a little late with their lunch on Saturday, and it ended up running into my prep time for the Weaver's gathering.... which made me freak out in ways I hadn't done for YEARS. 6. Not enough hours between 10:00 and 12:00. I came very close to not putting in my A&S project because I felt so bad about being late for my chirurgeon shift. My husband and Sarna took care of it for me (yet again. I love them both dearly). 7. Setting up for my gathering in the midst of people starting lunch at 2PM. 8. Realizing I hadn't changed from my chirurgeon shift garb into something a bit more "girly" for the gathering. 9. Rain. It rained a LOT (not as much as Atlantian 20 year, but it did rain.) 10. Watching my kin-friend give all she had to everyone else and needing someone to take care of her. I wish I could have done more for her. I tried with all my heart and still came up short. 11. Lots of uneaten food. Good: 1. Getting back to site on Saturday and finding out that no one was upset with me for abandoning camp and heading for home, only to arrive about an hour and 15 minutes late for my C-shift. 2. Having Sarna, the ever-prepared in our household. She rocks... PERIOD. She brought her car-port and that became the House Drunken Badger common area. It was just large enough to house everyone for the weaver's tea and she brought enough plastic to cover the sides so no one got wet. She is the awesomest person to walk the planet and she fits it all in her cute little truck. The woman deserves an Atlantian award for sticktoitiveness. If she can't do it, no one should even attempt it. End of sentence. 3. Having Ren ask me to help her with her new "court Toy" (a tinkle loom). That meant a lot to me. (Unfortunately, I was preoccupied with my upcoming tea and I wasn't able to be a good teacher... but I have promised her that I will be more thorough when we meet next. 4. Having my weaver's tea go so well. Everyone either brought something to share or contributed to the conversations that flowed around our little enclosure. People brought projects and we got to watch a demonatration my Gen that was just amazing! I want a set of those wooden weights! They were just the bees knees! :) We had to break up because court was starting, but everyone remarked about how wonderful the idea was and the suggestion was made to do it again. I was told that one of the things that made it so well, was it was open to all sorts of things, not just one weaving discipline. 5. Finally meeting Countess Bera, seeing her snartemo (SP?) that she's working on... it's just amazing! 6. Having a short amount of time to talk with my Laurel to be. We discussed what comes next... and the decision was a twill weave of some sort, and it will be a table runner for our very non-period folding table. I'm going to submit it in the Pennsic A&S competition. She is wonderful and very grounded. She is smart and so very helpful. 6. Court. Well, in a word... WOW. I won the A&S documentation award (I need to find out the name of the person who donated the award so I can thank them properly and get more information on it)... and to my shock and amazement, I was named the Baronial Artisan. I had hopes, beyond words at times. But I didn't want to set my heart on it, because our barony has many talened people. I wasn't able to get over to the A&S tent to see anything, so I have no idea how many people put anything in (for all I know, I was the only entrant in the artisan competition 7. My household and my Canton. You all are the absolute most wonderful people I could ever associate with. Sir Amalric was right in giving us the advice he did about households so long ago. They were all so veyr helpful with my tea and they worked together in stealth mode to be sure I was in court for SOME reason (whistling innocently).. to the point that I was damn near escorted from the porta-john to the fighting field. I would not have been able to do all that I did this weekend if it wasn't for all of them. Melania, of my canton, did the absolute most wonderful thing... she brought me food for my tea. I wasn't expecting it, but the woman went to hell and back to make the most wonderful food you could ever have at a rainsoaked tea. She is priceless and a woman who deserves jewels and my thanks! 8. A second bed. I needed a bed to myself after Saturday's events were over. I was exhausted after only two hours of sleep in more than 24 hours. (Up at 4:30 on Friday, two hours on Saturday morning and no sleep until after 9PM on Saturday). 9. Herbal sleeping pills. They are the wonder of the ages when camped next to a busy road and loud people. 10. Making glass beads in the rain. Yep... we did... I had arranged for a two-person class in glass bead making for Sarna and I with Lady Sveva Lucciola. We had originally found her in a very small cramped easy-up and talked her into going back with us to the River Point camp, where me, Sarna, Gwyn, Kristin, Mel, Muirghen all learned how to make glass beads. I made a beautiful purple bead (it's on my chain with my leaf blade knife). I can't wait to make more. It was just so much fun! I think I want that to be my non-weaving outlet. 11. Coming back to site this morning after hearing a horrible thunderstorm during the nite last night and seeing our pavilion still standing as we drove in the gate. The finial had sheared off at the point it meets the centerpole, but other than that, it was perfectly a-ok fine, hunky dory all is well. We actually had a hard time getting the spoke poles out... it was THAT sturdy. I have no fears of my pavilion during a storm anymore. If it could stand that... it will be fine. Now.. I need to go get some food and write a bunch of thank you notes to several people who made my weekend such a wonderful experience. Many many many special Kudos to Master Bryce de Byram, Melisent and Satan's Cigarette Boy as he is so commonly known. The event wouldn't have been the success it was without all of you. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate all of you and your efforts. Please don't forget to answer my survey... it's research for a small business idea... all comments appreciated, no reasonable offer refused!!! It won't take five minutes, I PROMISE! |
