Veteran's Day and an Etiquette Question

2002-07-15 - 9:19 a.m.

A conundrum of the "Right Thing(tm)"

I have heard it said we are sometimes defined by the choices we make and the decisions we live through.

Here is a question for all you folks out there.

Let's say you borrowed a sewing machine to make a pavilion, oh say, back in February or so. You were to return it in April, when the owner of said sewing machine contacted you to say she had moved her stuff to a new storage facility and there was now room for the machine. April passed and no word, May passed and no word, June passed and no word, then in early-July she contacts you via email to tell you she needs her machine back. You return her email to set up a date, and now here you sit, waiting for a reply. Meantime, In exchange for the use of the machine, you agree to sew something for the owner. When you made the bargain, it was with the idea that said machine would work.

After getting it home, you find out that it doesn't. You call the owner and she says to oil it, you do so, but it still doesn't work, and when it does, it won't sew anything but the lightest of stuff, which is totally not what you need. The owner assured you it would sew heavy canvas "like a dream".

Now here's the question... this person emails you in early July and says she needs her machine back for "pennsic sewing". You reply, but she seems to have dropped off the earth again, and you have no other means of contact for this person. There is about three weeks before Pennsic, and two of them are tied up with Projects and people coming over to work on said projects (one of which is an event of which you are the Autocrat). It's about a 5 hour trip roundtrip to take the machine home.

The question truly is, since the machine never worked to begin with, do you still have an obligation to complete the sewing she asked for as part of the agreement? Even though it will mean using your own machine, your own time, and possibly make you garb-light for Pennsic? What's fair here?

The article she asked you to make for her is a "tent top" basically a canvas reproduction of a dayshade cover. She provided the canvas.

I'm sort of stuck and not really sure what to do in this case. Time is running out to get the machine back to her (we figured it would have been gone by May at the latest), but the part that really has me stuck is the sewing I promised her. My love can deliver the machine if need be, but I'm not sure what to do about the other part. I'd really like some input on this sticky situation. Feel free to email me, or to post something on my guestbook.

Please don't forget to answer my survey... it's research for a small business idea... all comments appreciated, no reasonable offer refused!!! It won't take five minutes, I PROMISE!

For Matt, come home safe and sound! We miss you!
